Hit West End Musical Comes To Sunderland

Hit West End Musical Comes To Sudnerland

Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing, the smash hit West End musical is continuing its success in extending its national tour and is heading to Sunderland. The musical broke all box office records when it first opened in 2006 and is now the fastest selling show in West End history.

Since its announcement in November 2010, demand for tickets for this classic story has been extremely high with takings in excess of £10 million and many of the dates are completely sold out.

The producers of Dirty Dancing, said: “We are delighted to announce the next seven cities of the national tour. We have been overwhelmed by the success of the production to date and hope this amazing response will continue as the tour extends through to the end of 2012. It has been wonderful to see audiences across the country embracing the show with the same passion and support that we have been fortunate enough to receive in the West End over the past five years. As Dirty Dancing enters an exciting new stage in its UK journey, it shows no signs of slowing down.”

The success of the London show has led to overwhelming demand from fans to experience the magical love story that is Dirty Dancing in their home cities, and the producers are therefore delighted to be taking the show across the UK.

The show will be at The Sunderland Empire from Tuesday 18th September - Saturday 6th October 2012 so head to The Sunderland Empire website to book tickets today to avoid disappointment.

Sunderland FoC Student profile

Meet Gong, a current student here at Sunderland FoundationCampus.

Which programme are you studying at Sunderland FoundationCampus, and which degree do you want to progress onto?
I am studying the Undergraduate Foundation Programme in Business. I will study for a business degree at university.

How are you finding your programme at FoundationCampus?
I am really enjoying studying.  I think the programme is really helping me; it is very interesting and I am learning lots of things – not just about business.

Has your English improved? Which areas in particular?
My English has definitely improved – I speak English every day with my friends and it is very important to improve.  The teachers have taught me a lot about how to write an essay and I have improved a lot.

Where do you live?
I am living in the Precinct (university accomodation) and I really enjoy it. My flatmates are very kind and friendly. There are a lot of students from different countries.

Have you met any university students yet?
Some of my flatmates study at the business school which is very useful for me; I can ask questions about the business school. There is also a lady who is a student rep living in our block and she is very kind and helps me a lot. Every week we play basketball with other Chinese students at the university.

If you had to summarise FoundationCampus in one sentence, what would it be?
It is very interesting and useful, and helps you to learn the basics before you go onto the business school.

Masters Foundation Research Conference

All MFP (Masters Foundation Programme) students are taught Research Methods here at Sunderland FoundationCampus. A conference was organised to give our students an opportunity to showcase the impressive work they'd done, giving a presentation on their chosen research topics. We were very pleased with the results, which clearly demonstrated that all their hard work had been worthwhile.

A range of different topics were presented, ranging from AIDS awareness in Nigeria and increasing labour costs in China, to the psychology of online shoppers and differences in recruitment methods. All attendees took part in a vote: many congratulations to Zhao Lezhang who won a prize for Best Presentation, and to Song Xiangpeng for winning the prize for Best Poster. Well done guys!

Sunderland FoC Student Profile

Meet Priscilla, a student here at Sunderland FoundationCampus.

Which programme are you studying at FoundationCampus and which degree do you want to progress onto?
I am studying the Life Sciences Undergraduate Foundation Course.  I am going on to do Pharmacy.

How important is the guaranteed progression for you?
It was very important because I was told about the high educational level of the Pharmacy course at Sunderland University. I had the feeling that I would graduate here.

Has your English improved? Which areas in particular?
Sure, there has been an improvement in my English. The way I interact with people has really changed and everyone around me has noticed it. I write very well now. I am much more confident now.

Which parts of your FoundationCampus programme have prepared you best for your degree?
Most of the things we have been taught I knew a little but not very well.  My knowledge has been broadened. I did an ICT course before I came here but there are some things that I have forgotten or I didn’t know and I have learned many things.  I am so glad that I have improved.

If you could summarise FoundationCampus in one sentence, what would it be?
I think that any student going onto the Pharmacy course should go through FoundationCampus because it really helps one’s understanding and knowledge. It gives you the freedom to communicate with people of different backgrounds. It gives you the foundation of what you are going to study.

Would you recommend it to a friend?
Sure.

New term, new task

Among the activities that took place during our January 2012 induction week here at Sunderland FoundationCampus was a treasure hunt that took our students around the city, where they had to find things to complete a list of 5 tasks - and then provide photographic evidence, of course.

Congratulations to team "Made in China" who completed all tasks in the quickest time!

Task: Find, and try on, a Sunderland football shirt
